“You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.” –Psalm 10:17-18

As I sit here sobbing over the hundreds of facebook posts left on her wall, my heart breaks over Eve Carson’s tragic death this past week.

I lived with Eve in La Habana, Cuba while studying abroad at the university in 2006. I really admire her positive attitude and passion for life. She is gorgeous. encouraging. thoughtful. energetic. intelligent, sometimes corny. and forever famous for her creative “would you rather” questions on car rides throughout Cuba.

One of my sweetest memories of Eve began while chatting about life one afternoon in La Habana. She shared with me that she needed to “refocus” her involvement at UNC when she returned. The next thing I knew, she was elected Student Body President. Eve’s kind and ambitious personality will continue to be an inspiration to many.

Here is a photo after one of our salsa classes in La Habana…Eve is in the middle. Dancing Salsa with these guys was one of my favorite things to do that semester.

Death has been so much apart of this past year. Many folks are dieing daily in Gaza, Kenya and Iraq. Children die on the streets in Addis. HIV attacks the bodies of many each day. Jray was killed in a car crash. Ebony and her unborn baby were shot and killed late last year. My gran’ma’s best friend died earlier this week. And early Wednesday morning someone robbed Eve of her life with 4 bullets.

Through these horrible incidents, we can turn to the Giver of Life for true hope, love and peace.
